Reggio Emilia research trip cemented our way of understanding children's place as citizens and the role of the built environment in their development.

Reggio Emilia runs a study week each year for educators from around the world to visit and explore their unique approach to pre school and infant toddler’s education.

The environment as ‘the third teacher’, being inclusive of parents and carers in children's learning, children and educators as researchers, encouraging citizenship and relationships to society are all important parts of the Reggio ethos. There are also unique roles in the school, such as artists employed to help children’s creative learning, who also spend time creating innovative displays for the artwork so that it might be interesting and intriguing for adults. Their approach recognises that children's art is related to contemporary art practices typically found in the 'adult world'. There is also a focus on documentation of children's work, adding to the care given to what each child makes.

The trip was funded by the Design Council and was offered to James Sale from Co-DB as part of Pop up Parks Knee High Design Challenge.
